- Dienst is a system for configuring a set of individual
services running on distributed servers to cooperate in providing the
services of a digital library. It has been written in PERL. It works more
comfortably on Unix/Linux run webservers.
- DSpace is a digital library system to capture, store, index, preserve, and redistribute the intellectual output of a university’s research faculty in digital formats. Dspace has been developed jointly by MIT Libraries and Hewlett-Packard (HP). It is now freely available to research institutions world-wide as an open source system.
- Eprints is generic archive software under development by the University of Southampton. It is intended to create a highly configurable web-based archive. EPrints primary goal is to be set up as an open archive for research papers, but it could be easily used for other things such as images, research data, audio archives - anything that can be stored digitally by making changes in configuration. It works on Linux O/s and it needs MySQL, Perl modules and Apache webserver.
- Fedora is an Open-Source digital repository management system based on the Flexible Extensible Digital Object and Repository Architecture (Fedora). The Fedora repository system is open source software licensed under the Mozilla Public License. It requires Sun Java Software Development Kit, v1.4. Optionaly one can use MySql or Oracale 9i to create relational databse. It works both on Windows and Unix versions of O/s.
- Greenstone is a suite of software for building and distributing digital library collections. It provides a new way of organizing information and publishing it on the Internet or on CD-ROM. It is available for both Windows and Linux O/S. It requires Perl software to build collections.
- Invenio software developed by, maintained by, and used at, the CERN Document Server. It allows you to run your own electronic preprint or digital library server, your own online library catalogue or a document system on the web. It complies with the Open Archives Initiative metadata harvesting protocol (OAI-PMH) and uses MARC 21 as its underlying bibliographic standard. It is a free software issued under GNU-GPL license.
Library Management Systems:
- Athenaeum Light can handle large catalogues and manage borrower lists easily. As per its developer it is maint for school libraries. As of now its limit of records is 50000. It is available for both Windows and Macintosh. It can even be used in the multiuser environment.
- Avanti is a simple, scalable, networkable, client/server library system that can be deployed in small to medium scale libraries.
- Emilda is a complete Integrated Library System that features amongst others an OPAC, circulation and administration fuctions, Z39.50 capabilities and 100% MARC compatibility. MARC compatibility is achieved using Zebra in conjunction with MySQL.
- FireFly is a Complete Public Library system. It is being written in Python, Perl, with all data being stored in XML. The driving force behind this project is to give public libraries a Free-Software set to run and maintain library systems.
- Glibms is Library management software developed using PHP and PostgreSQL to automate the different activities carried out in the library.
- Java Book Cataloguing System software is primarily to create a Book Catalog using barcode data from the freely available cuecat(tm) bar code reader. It will use a rdbms backend database, and allow synchronization between different library branches.
- Koha Open Source Library System Claimed as worlds first Free Open Source Library System. Made in New Zealand by the Horowhenua Library Trust and Katipo Communications Ltd the Koha system is a full catalogue, opac, circulation and acquisitions system.
- Mylibrarian is a integrated suite of school library books management software targeted at secondary schools. The language used is totally Microsoft Visual BASIC 6.0 and Microsoft SQL 2000 server.
- NewGenLib is an integrated library management open source software
developed in India by Verus Solutions. If offers rich features of a modern
library management system.
- OpenBiblio is a open source library software written in PHP containing OPAC, Circulation, Cataloguing and Staff administration. It is good for small school and public libraries. It requires MySql, PHP and works on both Linux and Windows platforms.
- Open-ILS is website of an open source Intregrated Library System (ILS), named Evergreen. This software is being developed and maintained by the Georgia Public Library Service for use by the Georgia Library PINES Program, a consortium of 249 public libraries. This software can be downloaded for free, and anyone can contribute to development efforts.
- PhpMyLibrary is a open source web-based library software having catalouging, circulation, webopac, file managment modules, etc. It also supports import of data from ISIS databases. It requires PHP and MYSQL.
- Research Guide software helps librarians to build web-based subject guides.
- Seansoft Library Loan Management System 1.17B is a useful software for something like a school library. Each student can have a login, from which they loan books. Keeps track of weeks loaned and will alert a supervisor of overdue books. Has mail merge facilities to produce letters to individuals or a list for a noticeboard. Also features backup and basic repair facilities for the database. It requires VB5 Runtimes, DAO.
- WebLis is a free-of-charge Web based Library Integrated System based on CDS/ISIS. Presently it has Cataloguing system , OPAC (search), LOAN module and Statistical modules.

- CUFTS is an open source (GPL) OpenURL link resolver designed for use by library consortia. It supports multiple sites from one server, online management tools, usage statistics, and includes a knowledgebase of ~165 resources with ~200,000 title records.
